The Reel Deal:
It's awards season: "The Artist" director MICHEL HAZANAVICIUS (pronounced Haz-NAV-vi-choos) picked up the top award at the annual Directors Guild Awards, which are usually seen as one of the big predictors of a win at the Oscars.
He beat out a bunch of bigger names including WOODY ALLEN and MARTIN SCORSESE for the honor, and told reporters "It's maybe the highest recognition I could hope for."
Only six times in the 63-year history of the guild awards has the winner failed to go on to win the Oscar for best director. And, of course, it also makes "The Artist," which received 10 nominations for the Academy Awards last week, the frontrunner for 'Best Picture' at the Oscars.Oscar odds are already being posted on betting sites. MIRANDA LAMBERT had to cancel her concert Friday night in Tallahassee, Florida. Her childhood friend, Mark "Tex" Adams, was killed in a car accident, and Miranda went to the funeral. She also lost her father-in-law, Dick Shelton, last week. Miranda has rescheduled the Tallahassee show for May 17th. (Marino)
AL GREEN is surely hoping that President BARACK OBAMA gets re-elected. After the crooner-in-chief sang one line of Al's 1972 hit, "Let's Stay Together" at the Apollo Theater last week during a fundraiser, downloads of Al's original version went up 490-percent! The track was downloaded 16-thousand times for the week that ended January 22nd, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
FYI: There is also talk that President Obama has been invited sing "Let's Stay Together" on "American Idol." (Marino)Broadcast, cable and video news:
Another day, another show for JENNIFER LOPEZ, who's added a new show called "Amigas, Inc," about four teenaged Miami girls who start a party-planning business in order to throw each other a perfect 15th birthday party --known in the Hispanic community as Quinceneras. The show will be aired on an MTV channel targeted to young Hispanics, formerly called MTV Tres.
This is in addition to her judging stint on "Idol" and the new talent show with MARC ANTHONY called "Q'Viva! The Chosen."Bottom feeding:
Warning: note sexual content.
Most actresses like to check out the goods at Prada or Chanel, but JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT engaged in some naughty retail therapy the other night. Spies on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard tell the NY Post's Page Six gossip column the actress popped in to the Hustler store, checked out the (ahem) "toys" section and splurged on a few booty-baring thongs.
Of course, as the Post points out, it *could* be because J-Love was doing some research for her new role in the Lifetime series “The Client List,” in which she plays a Texas mom-turned-prostitute. (Lee) -
