Guilty Pleasures:
No winner in Wednesday night's drawing for the Powerball Lottery. That means Saturday night's drawing is valued at $253 million ($170.5 million cash value). Powerball is played in 44 states, Washington, DC and the U-S Virgin Islands. Chances of winning the grand prize (all five numbers plus the powerball) are 1 in 175.2 million.
The Weather:
Federal forecasters say warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures point to an above-average number of hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin this season --as many as eight, including three "major" storms.
A typical year brings 12 named storms, including six hurricanes.
Meteorologists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expect 12 to 17 named storms for the full season, which ends Nov 30. NOAA predicts two or three major hurricanes with winds of at least 111 mph.
Six named storms have already formed this year, along two hurricanes (Chris and Ernesto). Tropical Storm Debby did the most damage in the U-S so far, killing seven people and drenching northern Florida.
The only thing that might change projections is the arrival of of El Niño in August or September. El Niño is a warming of tropical Pacific Ocean water that affects weather around the world, what the meteorologists call "a competing factor" because it strengthens the vertical wind shear over the Atlantic, which suppresses storm development. Warning: note sexual content.
Most mommies can't imagine their baby girls getting freaky for the cameras, but rumors are swirling that KRIS JENNER actually negotiated the sale of KIM KARDASHIAN's infamous sex tape! RadarOnline.com reports the limelight-loving mama negotiated the deal, pulled in somewhere between a quarter and half-million bucks and the source that dished out the information actually passed a polygraph test. (Lee)Fashion Emergency:
Fashion people are positively giddy over LADY GAGA'S cover photo for the September issue of Vogue. It hit the web after midnight and Refinery29.com says it has "all the ingredients for greatness." La Gaga looks "epic" in a fuschia hourglass structured MARC JACOBS dress with origami detailing. But that's not all: Gaga wouldn't be Gaga is she didn't go naked. She also released a second image from her Vogue photo shoot that showed her wearing an enormous feathered hat designed by STEVEN JONES... and nothing else.(Bartha)
Ratings:
How did MATTHEW PERRY's new fall TV show, "Go On," do when NBC offered up a "sneak preview" of it after the Olympics Wednesday night?
Turns out around 16 million viewers stayed around to check out the former "Friends" star as a talk-show host --good numbers for a prime-time show, let alone one that aired outside prime-time.Grace notes:
MICHAEL JACKSON probably wouldn't want to make a federal case out it, but his family sure does. Michael's will is back in court, but this time it's on a federal level. Memoriabilia dealer Howard Mann claims he has evidence that proves the will is not valid. He told the New York Daily News that he'll present evidence in court next month. Howard is dealing with a copyright battle with the Jackson estate over a tribute book he published two years ago with Michael's mother, KATHERINE JACKSON. (Marino)
An all-star DEEP PURPLE tribute album is in the works. "Re-Machined: A Tribute To Machine Head" features the entire classic 1972 Purple album re-recorded by all sorts of big names. CARLOS SANTANA and the FLAMING LIPS each do their own takes on "Smoke On The Water," IRON MAIDEN tackles "Space Truckin'," METALLICA does "When A Blind Man Cries," and there's a whole lot more. The project was put together as a tribute to the late Deep Purple founder and keyboard player, JON LORD who died last month at age 71. (Marino)
