PGA Golf:
For the first time in its 80-year history, the Augusta National Golf Club has female members.
The home of the Masters, under increasing criticism the last decade because of its all-male membership, invited former Secretary of State CONDOLEEZZA RICE and South Carolina financier DARLA MOORE to become the first women in green jackets when the club opens for a new season in October. Both women accepted. Augusta National chairman Billy Payne called it "a joyous occasion."
A person with knowledge of club operations said Rice and Moore first were considered as members five years ago. Augusta National, which did not have a black member until 1990, is believed to have about 300 members.
Editor's note: Great day for women. Rich women, that is.
--They must need someone to make sammiches in the clubhouse. (Maiman)Better late than never, dept:
North Korea just took a major step forward in human rights.
Orange.co.uksays women are finally being allowed to ride bicycles. Kim Jong Il prohibited women from cycling in urban areas. The ban was put into place after the daughter of one of his generals was killed riding a bike in downtown Pyongyang. A North Korean news website announced that the ban was lifted alongside the headline: "penalties imposed by the father are being lifted by the son."
Editor's note: In other news, women are still not allowed to vote in North Korea. But, then again, neither is anyone else. (Still)The Reel Deal:
Ready for a remake of the movie musical, "Annie"?
It's not happening (wait for it...) "Tomorrow" --but could be as soon as next year, according to EMMA THOMPSON, who's writing and starring in the movie. She tells the BBC filming could start as early as next year, and the flick will be produced by JAY-Z, who's also writing the music for the film.
In case you're wondering what kind of remake this will be, remember: Jay-Z sampled Annie's song from the original movie for his 1998 hit, "Hard Knock Life."
WILL SMITH's daughter, WILLOW, will be playing the role of "Annie" in the film.Fashion Emergency:
An online retailer is offering t-shirts emblazoned with the phrase "KRISTEN STEWART Is A Trampire". StyleList.com says other t-shirt options to show your support for team R-Patt: "ROBERT PATTINSON Deserves Better" and "Kristen Stewart [bad word] Sucks" The tops will only set you back about $20. And, if you're like JODIE FOSTER and you want to show your support Kristen, there are also shirts that say, "Team Kristen For Life." (Bartha)
Sucking Up:
NJ GOP Gov CHRIS CHRISTIE says there's no chance he'll "tone it down" when he delivers the keynote address at this year's Republican convention. Christie says he worked on his speech while he was on vacation last week, and insists that Republican officials have not asked him to back off his usual, bombastic delivery.
He tells CBS New York, "I don't think they have any expectation nor have they requested that I have a personality-ectomy between now and next Tuesday... They know what they're buying." (Pacelli) -
