Political Racket /Dirty Tricks:
The House moved quickly yesterday to make sure the Pentagon can provide death benefits to families of service members during the government shutdown. That bill passed without dissent, 425-to-0 and now goes on to the Senate.
Meantime, Defense Secretary CHUCK HAGEL announced the Pentagon was partnering during the shutdown with the private Fisher House Foundation to provide the families of fallen service members with the full set of benefits they have been promised. (Pacelli)Healthcare:
Just because the Affordable Care Act has kicked-in, there are still some employers --private and municipal-- trying to work their way around it. In Florida, the Polk County School District is considering having all substitute teachers work for contractors and get less than 30 hours a week --two ways to avoid having to provide medical insurance.
A company called Kelly Educational Staffing already handles similar requests for other area school districts. The district is looking at a savings of about $718-thousand dollars by moving to a contractor set-up. (Pacelli)Trash talk and satellite dish:
Here's a shocker: Star magazine is reporting that "Wedding Crashers" star OWEN WILSON's married personal trainer is six months pregnant with his baby. Owen is 44; his trainer, CAROLINE LINDQVIST, is 41 and currently separated from her husband, RITU CHOPRA, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. She filed for divorce May 29.
Owen has a two-year-old son with former girlfriend JADE DUELL.
The supermarket tabloid quotes a source who claims "Caroline was shocked to learn that she was pregnant but decided to keep the baby. Owen plans on being fully involved and will financially care for the child, but has no intention of settling down with Caroline, which is tearing her up."
The NY Post reports Owen is currently in the Big Apple and filming the movie "Squirrels to the Nuts" with JENNIFER ANISTON --and had no comment on the story.Broadcast, cable and video news:
KANYE WEST was on "JIMMY KIMMEL Live" last night (Wednesday) to settle their so-called "rap fued," which began last month, after Jimmy aired a Kanye parody sketch using a child actor to mock the rapper's interview with BBC.
After Kanye sent a bunch of angry Twitter replies, taking Jimmy to task over the bit, Jimmy joked that he'd always wanted to be in a rap feud: "I was only in one other rap feud --It was 1992, and I accused Sir Mix-A-Lot of only liking medium butts."
So yesterday he semi-apologized to Kanye, saying "I didn't think it would be something that bothered you."
As for Kanye, he said "I'm just here to make good music, make people feel good when they hear my music, and y'know, when I did that interview (with BBC), I was really vocal with a lot of things I've been dealing with in the past 10 years, and the classification of 'just' a celebrity. To me, I'm a creative genius, there's no other way to word it. You're not supposed to say that about yourself, and I say things the wrong way a lot of times, but my intention's always positive."Grace notes:
This was a day NOT to skip school. The kids at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, New York, were treated to a surprise concert yesterday by Sir PAUL McCARTNEY! 400 of the city's best arts students filled up the auditorium for a "master class" and performance. Paul took questions and did 13 songs with his amazing live band, including a few from his new album, "New," which will be out on Tuesday. The show was taped and you'll be able to hear it Monday night at 9PM at Yahoo.com.
FYI: Yesterday was also Paul's second wedding anniversary with his third wife, NANCY SHEVELL. (Marino)KENNY "Babyface" EDMONDS will get the 2509th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today. SEAN "P-DIDDY" COMBS, ANTONIO "L-A" REID and USHER will be speaking at the unveiling, scheduled for 11:30 am (Pacific), next to the W Hollywood Hotel.
