Births:
A San Francisco woman has given birth to a 16 pound, one-point-seven ounce baby boy, which is the biggest in state history. His mother, SOSEFINA TAGALU, is Samoan and his father, PAVA OTUHIVA, is Tongan. He told CBS /San Francisco, "You put that together, yeah, we make big babies...but we didn't know it was going to be this big." The baby, SAMMISANO OTUHIVA, was born back in August and his dad said the couple were not going to publicize the big baby angle but it always bothered him when the news reported other record babies. "Bigger IS better," he said.
Sucking the life out of the wire services:
It's now official: Yesterday, former "American Idol" runner-up CLAY AIKEN announced he is running for Congress in North Carolina.
He'll enter a Democratic primary whose winner will face incumbent Republican RENEE ELLMERS. He's running as a political outsider with a focus on jobs, the economy and education while giving a familiar refrain about putting people in Congress who aren't beholden to their party or special interests.
This means he has no shot of winning. Ahem.
For what it's worth, he's running in the state's 2nd Congressional District, a safe Republican seat where MITT ROMNEY won 58 percent of the vote. (Republicans only won 47 percent of the vote in House districts nationwide.)
Still, Ellmers --the incumbent-- is already attacking him, saying in a radio interview, "Apparently his performing career isn't going so well and he's bored," noting that he'd only come in second on the show. In a statement via a rep, she called Aiken "a performer whose political views more closely resemble those of San Francisco than [North Carolina]."
Editor's note: So, the question is: Is he going to win a primary against a competent representative, or is he going to lose in a gerrymandered district? The answer: YES! (Maiman)Lowering expectations:
Parents are calling for a Long Island daycare center to be shut down as it undergoes "thorough sanitizing" after hosting an adult nude party.
Krazy Kidz in Medford is facing criticism after pictures surfaced from the party called "Jungle Gym & Pajama All-Night Dance Party: For Grown Ups Who Won't Grow Up."
The images showed what appeared to be naked partygoers using bouncy houses and other children's entertainment equipment. The party also included nude body painting and "warm Jello wrestling."
The invites said there would be "tasteful nudity," but no "orgy, strippers or sexually lewd content."
The owners of Krazy Kids released a statement, saying its staff was not involved in the party and their "private party facility rental policy is currently under review."
Editor's note: There's no telling what the kids'll find in the ball pit.
--They said there'd be "tasteful nudity," but no "orgy, strippers or sexually lewd content"? Then what the hell was the point? (Maiman)Grace notes:
Would you pay $10-dollars to see PRINCE? Well, yeah! BBC News says His Purpleness gave a press conference in London on Tuesday night, inside someone's living room! Prince said he wants to do a bunch of small club shows in London, and keep the tickets really cheap. He didn't announce any specific dates or venues yet, but that will come soon. Prince is touring with a three-piece all-female band called 3rd EYE GIRL, and has a new album on the way called "Plectrum Electrum." (Marino)
Sochi Olympics:
The latest ABC News/Washington Postpoll sez half of Americans have a favorable view of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. That's a lot, of course, but far fewer than were up for the 2012 summer games in London. Biggest draw back for many --dim views of the Russian president, VLADIMIR PUTIN.
And if that wasn't enough, check out KEITH OLBERMAN's look at the Sochi Olympics and all the things that have gone wrong... in just the past couple of days! The Jamaican Bobsled team made it to Sochi... but their equipment didn't. The team is missing some rather important stuff, including runners for their two-man sled, helmets, sliding gear and clothes, so they couldn't make their first practice runs yesterday.
Sports Illustrated reports the problem apparently occurred when two team members, driver WINSTON WATTS and brakeman MARVIN DIXON, missed their connecting flight in Moscow after bad weather delayed them in New York. -
