Running with the Bulls:
The annual Running of the Bulls is now underway in Pamplona, Spain, with all the excitement it causes each year. Yesterday there was the big ceremonial party (beginning the Festival of Sanfermin) and today, the first bull-run, which traditionally draws the largest number of participants --and the largest number of injuries as well. The bull-runs --usually with four bulls-- begin each morning at 8 am, and average around four minutes to get to the bull-ring.
FYI: Last year 26 people were taken to hospital from the festival's eight runs, including 10 people who were gored by a bull. Fifteen people have been killed in the bull runs since they began to keep records back in 1911.
This morning's run: The Fuente Ymbro bulls, from Cadiz, Spain, have caused a total of five gorings and some 49 other injuries to runners over the years they've been at the Festival. However, early reports say the bulls made no attempt to charge at runners, nobody was gored and just four people injured in the very fast run --2 min 28 sec.Health and Medical Briefs:
Forty percent of the most popular sunscreen products sold in the United States fail to meet basic sun safety guidelines. New research published in the Journal of the American Medical Associationlooked at the sun protection labels for 65 products that account for the top 1 percent of all sunscreens sold by Amazon.com. Four out of 10 of those sunscreens lacked the minimal resistance to water and sweat recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology.
Sunscreens are regulated by the FDA as "over-the-counter" drugs and mandates clear sun protection labeling. U.S. News & World Reportsays for the best sun protection, you should look for sunscreens with "broad-spectrum protection" against both U-V-A "aging" rays and U-V-B "burning" rays, with a minimal sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more. You should also seek out "water-resistant" sunscreens that stay effective after 40 minutes in the water. (Bartha)Lowering expectations:
Warning: Note drug content!
A new gym in San Francisco will allow members to smoke cannabis while working out.
Not only that, Power Plant Fitness will actually be offering the green stuff --in edible form-- to members who want it. The facility is owned in part by former professional football player RICKY WILLIAMS. Williams and the other owners say using marijuana while exercising can help people focus and relax. Gym members will need to possess an active medical marijuana prescription to participate. (Still)TV Briefs:
Tragedy in TV Land when a stuntman working on the set of a new TV show called "Shooter" was accidentally run over by an SUV driven by TOM SIZEMORE yesterday. Bystanders tell TMZ.com that eight men tried to lift the vehicle off the injured man, who is reportedly in "real bad shape" and was airlifted to a local hospital. A rep for Sizemore says the three cars pulled out at once, he followed directions from the stunt coordinator and never saw the stunt man before hearing a "thump." (Lee)
FYI: The show --about a decorated ex-Marine sniper who is coaxed back into action by his former commanding officer after he learns about a plot to kill the President-- premieres Tue, Jul 19 on the USA network. -
