Getting up to speed:
Everybody has been talking about HURRICANE IRMA.
The Category 5 storm, with winds of up to 185 miles an hour, whipped past the islands of Barbuda and Antigua yesterday and last night moved past Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, where one wind gust measured 111 miles an hour yesterday.
At this point, the National Hurricane Center says Irma will move north of Haiti today and south of the Bahamas on Friday.
Then, the most recent track of the hurricane will take it right up the east coast of Florida beginning early on Sunday, and hitting the border of South Carolina and Georgia --still with hurricane winds between 74-110 miles an hour-- by Monday night.
The entire Florida peninsula is only about 100 miles wide, which is fairly small compared to the size of the storm, in which tropical-storm-force winds presently extend outward up to 185 miles from the storm center and hurricane-force winds extend 50 miles away.

Hurricane Irma is so insanely powerful that it is being detected by seismometers in the Caribbean. Yeah --those earthquake measuring things. Mashable.com says Irma's sustained 185 mile-per-hour winds are churning up waves and monstrous storm surges. The storm isn't causing tremors. The equipment is picking up seismic noise from Irma's winds and waves. As the storm's winds increase the closer it gets, all of that energy gets transferred to the ground. Irma's waves crashing into the coast are also causing minor hits of seismic energy strong enough to be picked up on equipment. (Bartha)Filling a need:
Sneaker company Adidas has released a new shoe just in time for Oktoberfest.
The newly unveiled "beer repellant" sneakers are designed to "withstand the rigors of the Oktoberfest." Basically, they're waterproof and clean up easily if you spill your beer on them. Designers say they'll also withstand other fluids in the event the wearer drinks too much and gets sick on them. They're fashionable too, being made with brown leather so they'll look good with Lederhosen. So far, they're only available online. (Still)Today's police blotter:
Warning --note sexual content:
Five of the nurses at the Denver Health Medical Center have been suspended for three weeks after it was found that they "inappropriately viewed a deceased patient's body and talked about it."
Somebody called the ABC-TV affiliate in Denver and tipped them off to the incident in which the nurses reportedly admired the size of the deceased patient's genitals and at one point opened a body bag to view parts of the body.
In fact, the Denver police later said "Multiple staff members viewed the victim while he was incapacitated, including after he was deceased." Nice. -
