Pushing Up Les Marguerites:
HUBERT DE GIVENCHY, the acclaimed French designer who founded the House of Givenchy, died at the age of 91 on Saturday. Peoplesays Givenchy was best known for his work dressing actress AUDREY HEPBURN, who owned a vast wardrobe of Givenchy pieces and wore many of his legendary designs in her movie roles in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "Sabrina" and "Funny Face" --just to name a few. In 1952 Givenchy launched his own brand. One year later, he was tapped by Hepburn herself to create pieces for her 1954 film, Sabrina. He subsequently designed pieces for seven more of her films, including the most memorable little black dress in movie history, the one worn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Givenchy also dressed GRACE KELLY, INGRID BERGMAN and JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS, who frequently wore his pieces. (Bartha)
St Patrick's Day:
With St. Patrick's Day upon us this weekend, consider the health benefits of... beer. HellaWella.com informs us that moderate beer consumption has been linked to a number of health benefits, including providing heavy amounts of B vitamins and reducing the risk of kidney stones.
Silicon is found in beer and promotes bone strength, important in preventing osteoporosis. It's highest in pale beers and those with higher levels of hops.
Dark beers contain more fiber than light beers, and are packed with iron. Fiber helps reduce cholesterol levels and iron carries oxygen in the blood and regulates cell growth. (Kaye)Stars and their movies:
MARK BRIDGES --the guy who won that Jet Ski for delivering the shortest acceptance speech at the Oscars-- is now putting it up for grabs at Omaze.com.
The Hollywood Reporter says the money raised from the sale will benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF), which provides support and services for current and retired members that work in the entertainment industry.
Depending on how much you donate --between $10 to $5,000-- you will get raffle entries for the jet ski, which will randomly be selected by Omaze. Deadline to enter is April 26 and you must be at least 13 years old to enter.Jedi mind tricks:
This guy is the literal meaning of "bubble brain."
An 84-year-old man from Northern Ireland went to the hospital with symptoms that weren't odd for someone his age. He complained of being unsteady and falling several times in recent weeks. He said his left arm and leg felt weakened. He didn't drink or smoke and was in very good health. They took several tests and it wasn't until they did a CT scan and MRI that they found --or didn't find-- the problem: there was a large bubble of air where his right frontal lobe should have been!
He was diagnosed with pneumocephalus, a condition common after brain surgery --but this man had never had one! Turns out he had a benign bone tumor in his brain that pushed air into his cranium, creating the pocket. A surgery could have removed the air from his head but he refused, citing his age and other health factors. He is taking medication and is being monitored so he doesn't have a stroke but his condition will likely worsen without surgery. (Myers)
