In a move that will likely affect billions-of-dollars in the coming years, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 6-to-3 to strike down a federal law that banned sports betting in almost every state. That vote comes after New Jersey initiated a legal battle back in 2010 to make sports wagering legal at racetracks and casinos in the state.
Previous state efforts to legalize sports betting were blocked by the "Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act" of 1992. In the majority opinion, Justice SAMUEL ALITO wrote, "Congress can regulate sports gambling directly, but if it elects not to do so, each State is free to act on its own. Our job is to interpret the law Congress has enacted and decide whether it is consistent with the Constitution. PASPA is not... PASPA 'regulates state governments' regulation' of their citizens. The Constitution gives Congress no such power." (Pacelli)Good timing award:
When you gotta go, you gotta go.
KEVIN PRYZTULA had made plans to propose to his girlfriend ALYSSA in front of the fountains in Wenonah Park in Bay City, California, which is nice, since they already have a son together. While their young boy played on the side of the fountain, Kevin dropped to one knee and popped the question.
Their three-year-old son, meanwhile, dropped his pants and started peeing on Bay City's Ring of Friendship statue next to the fountain. And the entire beautiful moment was caught on video. Kevin's 11-year-old daughter, who shot the video, can be heard giggling in the background. Bride-to-be Allyssa says her son "stole the show" because his potty training is a "work in progress." A new musical based on the classic BILLY WILDER comedy, "Some Like It Hot" will smoke out Broadway in 2020. Deadline.com says MARC SHAIMAN and SCOTT WITTMAN are working on the score. They won a Tony Award for "Hairspray." CASEY NICHOLAW will direct. The 1959 film starred JACK LEMMON, TONY CURTIS and MARILYN MONROE. There was a Broadway musical based on the film in 1972 called "Sugar," which starred ROBERT MORSE, TONY ROBERTS and ELAINE JOYCE. (Marino)
Smoking or Non Smoking:
More U.S. parents are smoking pot around their kids, and that trend could be undermining all the progress made in limiting kids' exposure to secondhand smoke. WebMD.com says fewer parents are smoking cigarettes who have kids in the home these days --about 20 percent in 2015 compared with more than 27 percent in 2002. But marijuana use among cigarette-smoking parents increased dramatically during that same period, indicating that kids in those families could be exposed to more secondhand smoke than ever.
Among parents who smoke cigarettes, pot use increased from 11 percent in 2002 to over 17 percent in 2015, the researchers found. Researchers also found there's been an uptick in marijuana use among parents who don't smoke tobacco, from two percent to four percent during the same period. But marijuana use was nearly four times more common among cigarette smokers versus nonsmokers. (Bartha)
