Beer-drinking:
Fire up the pop-top and the belching sound effects: Memorial Day kicks off prime beer-drinking season. This year, the Nielsen Company predicts U-S adults will buy a whopping 21 million cases (worth $381 million retail) in major supermarkets alone during the two weeks surrounding the holiday. That makes Memorial Day second only to July Fourth in terms of the year's biggest suds sales. In fact, volume-wise, those two weeks account for fully five percent of total annual beer sales. (Kaye)
Rounding up the usual suspects:
Cops in Florida are on the lookout for a pair of thieves with a lot of loose change.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office shared security video of two men using a drill to break into a cash machine at a car wash in Dania Beach. The men made off with over three-thousand quarters during the late night heist, amounting to $849-dollars. They were last spotted driving off in a silver Ford Focus hatchback.
Editor's note: Pretty sure you'll find them at the nearest Chuck E Cheese. (Still)I'm a Poll Man:
The Hill reports that a new Harvard CAPS/Harris poll puts PRESIDENT TRUMP's approval rating at 45-percent, up slightly from the 44-percent in the same poll in April. He's up five-percent with independent voters, but down three-percent with Republicans.
The president gets good marks on job creation, the economy and fighting against terrorism. He's still underwater on foreign affairs, immigration and government administration. (Pacelli)Grace notes from Vinny Marino:
The man who invented the fuzz tone effect for guitars has died. Billboard.com says Nashville recording engineer GLENN SNODDY was 96 years old. In 1960, he was working on a session with MARTY ROBBINS, and midway through the tune, "Don't Worry," guitarist GRADY SMITH's amplifier blew its transformer which created a distorted sound. They decided to leave it in and after that, producers in Nashville wanted the same sound. Glenn re-created that sound with a box he built that allowed a guitarist to stomp on it to switch the distortion on and off. The Gibson instrument company bought the rights to Glenn's design and released the Maestro Fuzz-Tone. That's the box KEITH RICHARDS used on "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," PAUL McCARTNEY plugged his bass into for the "fuzz bass" sound on "Think For Yourself" off THE BEATLES' "Rubber Soul" album along with countless other tunes by artists all over the world.
