Hey everybody... make sure you reboot your routers when you get home from work today. The reason: The FBI is warning that Russia-linked malware could be lurking in routers used in most homes and small offices.
The good news: The source of the malware has been removed from the internet and a basic reboot of your router will clear out the problem.
CBS News says the VPNFilter malware is likely already in hundreds of thousands of home and office routers globally. In addition to being able to render small office and home office routers inoperable, the U.S. Justice Department says the malware also could potentially collect information passing through the router. CNET.com says that means the malware would be able to steal logins and passwords, and monitor industrial control systems.
There's no easy way to tell if your router has been compromised by the VPNFilter malware. Ars Technica says the malware has been removed from the internet. Rebooting your router, essentially destroys the part of the malware that allows hackers to spy on your activities. (Bartha)
