Back from the dead:
A South African woman who had been declared dead after a car crash in Carletonville, southwest of Johannesburg, was found alive in the morgue refrigerator several hours after the crash.
In the crash, her car had rolled, and in the process, tossed all three of the vehicle's occupants out, killing two of them. First responders said she showed no signed of life when they first examined her. Distress Alert operations manager GERRIT BRADNICK told Agence France Presse "All the right checks were done --breathing, pulse-- so the patient was declared deceased." Now there will be an investigation.
Meanwhile, one of the workers at the mortuary told the local newspaper "You never expect to open a fridge and find someone in there alive. Can you imagine if we had begun the autopsy and killed her?"Taking everything much too seriously:
A mural has been unveiled in North Providence, Rhode Island, showing the mayor sitting on a toilet.
Mayor CHARLES LOMBARDI says he's not offended by the unflattering wall art, which shows him wearing a crown while sitting on the porcelain throne. Artist PAUL MORSE says he doesn't have anything against the mayor, but he was hired to paint the mural. The image reportedly stems from an ongoing dispute between the mayor and a local building owner. (Still)Getting up to speed:
The Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating contest is over for another year and there was no change in the winners... except that JOEY CHESTNUT set a new record by eating 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes, breaking his record of 73. And in case you're interested, Nathan's says a hot dog and bun is 280 calories, meaning he ate 20,720 calories... and 1,332 grams of fat. You're welcome.
The women's champ was MIKI SUDO again, who downed 36 dogs, short of SONYA THOMAS's record of 45. MICHELLE LESCO placed second with an unofficial 27, with Sonya in third, only eating 26 this year.
