The tributes to amazing actor CHADWICK BOSEMAN --who passed away Friday of colon cancer at the age of just 43-- continue. Last night (Sunday), ABC aired his great movie, “Black Panther,” commercial-free, followed by a tribute to Chadwick as well. Former President BARACK OBAMA, tweeted about him as well, noting "Chadwick came to the White House to work with kids when he was playing Jackie Robinson," [In the 2013 film, "42"] "You could tell right away that he was blessed. To be young, gifted, and Black; to use that power to give them heroes to look up to; to do it all while in pain --what a use of his years." Friday night LeBRON JAMES held a moment of silence after the Los Angeles Lakers eliminated the Portland Trail Blazers from the first round of the NBA playoffs. LeBron did the Wakanda salute during a moment of silence, held for the late actor and later said “It actually felt like we had our Black superhero and nobody could touch us. To lose that, it’s sad in our community."
Warning --note language: LeBron also said "To lose Black Panther and Black Mamba (KOBE BRYANT) in the same year --2020 is the shittiest year," he said.
It was also revealed that Chadwick had gotten married just a few months before his death. The NY Post's Page Six reported that he'd been engaged to singer TAYLOR SIMONE LEDWARD since October of 2019. They were rumored to be an item going as far back as 2015. The paper could not confirm when the pair had been married, but during the NAACP Image Awards in March 2019, Boseman was spotted giving Ledward a kiss before he accepted his award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for “Black Panther.”
Chadwick's final movie, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” in which he worked with DENZEL WASHINGTON, is set to be released later this year. Denzel knew Chadwick for a long time --he actually paid for Chadwick's study abroad tuition at the British American Drama Academy more than 20 years ago. The Hollywood Reporter says Chadwick was an undergraduate enrolled in Howard University at the time, and along with eight other students, was accepted into the BADA’s prestigious Oxford Mid-Summer Program. Actress PHYLICIA RASHAD, who was a teacher at the Howard at the time, reached out to Denzel for his help in the covering tuition fees.
Netflix was all set to do a virtual preview for "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" tonight (Monday), but cancelled the preview which would have included footage from the movie along with commentary from the film's director, George C. Wolfe and his co-star VIOLA DAVIS. In case you haven't heard about the movie, it's based on two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner AUGUST WILSON's play, set in Chicago in 1927 during a single afternoon recording session, as a group of musicians waits on Ma Rainey, known as "Mother of the Blues," played by Davis. Chadwick plays an ambitious trumpet player at the recording session, who gets the other members of the band to tell "stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives."
Fast foods: Dairy Queen is the latest to lay on the Pumpkin Spice, revealing they're bringing back the Pumpkin Pie Blizzard Treat, with real pumpkin pie pieces and vanilla soft serve ice cream, all topped with whipped creme and a touch of nutmeg.
