What's the Buzz:
If you love a little class warfare, then get ready for the Doorman Strike of 2010.
More than 30-thousand workers in the residential buildings of New York City --mostly in Manhattan-- are ready to hit the picket line at midnight tonight.
Workers are fighting with building owners over the usual: Pay, benefits, sick days, etc. The owners claim the recession makes it tough for them to afford a significant increase in labor costs, but the doormen's union counters that the cost of living in the city has kept rising and its members need raises to cope.
The strike also involves building maintenance personnel, too --porters, superintendents, elevator operators and janitors (which means tenants would have to take out their own garbage), but the doormen are getting the focus because, jeez, you can't open your own door? The snarkier media outlets are having a field day.
--Gawker.com wants to know whether "You are ready to make fun of rich people when their doormen go on strike."
--New York Magazine frets that "Doormen May Soon Force Rich People to Exert Themselves Slightly."
--The Village Voice, chimes in that "This Doorman Strike Would Be Scary, if We Had Doormen."
--Even the NY Times inadvertently offered up a gem from one tenant who said, "It would be a bummer if they strike. It's a lot nicer when they help with the work."
Actually doormen provide many valuable services for tenants: They sign for packages, keep out intruders, act as de facto baby sitters and keep their eyes on the block. Many apartment dwellers will feel their absence if they walk off. (Maiman)Sucking the life out of the wire services:
LARRY KING may not be headed to divorce court, after all. The CNN host's legal eagle told People magazine that there's a "50-50 chance" he may not call it quits with SHAWN SOUTHWICK. CINDY ADAMS of the NY Post reports Larry is a doting daddy and wants the focus to be on the health of his two sons. (Lee)
Why on earth did MEL GIBSON and OKSANA GRIGORIEVA call it quits so soon after the birth of their baby daughter? While some say it was a completely amicable decision, the new mommy tells Us Weekly that she can't give the real reason but the public will find out "everything" in the near future. Despite the mystery, the Russian beauty maintains she and Mel plan to raise little SOPHIA together. (Lee)
Broadcast, cable and video news:
FOX has renewed its long-running show, "Cops," for another season --its 23rd. The Hollywood Reporter says an upcoming show will feature its 800th episode and has shown 2,044 arrests across 140 U-S cities so far.
Grace notes:
MILEY CYRUS can't get to Europe, and SELENA GOMEZ can't get home from there. The volcanic ash from Iceland has caused Miley to cancel the London premiere of her movie "The Last Song," and Selena has been on a concert and promotional tour of the continent, but there are no flights home to the USA. USHER and ADAM LAMBERT also had to bag promotional visits to Europe. (Marino)
Look what I found:
A guy in England has spotted his wife on Google Street View 43-times.
According to Orange.co.uk, 55-year-old TERRY SOUTHGATE was using the popular Google feature to zoom in on his neighborhood. That's when he found a picture of his wife WENDY walking their dog TRIXIE. But, as he navigated through the streets, he was shocked to see her popping up over and over again in different views.
In several of the pictures, his wife could be seen staring right into the camera. Wife Wendy says she remembers seeing the Google camera van driving around. She says, "I didn't know what it was doing. It was just driving round very, very slowly. When Terry showed me I couldn't believe it."
Editor's note: Mark my words --one of these days Google's gonna snap a picture of some guy hanging out with his mistress. Then, there's gonna be a lawsuit. (Still) -
