Anniversaries:
(Six years ago --2004) we said goodbye to "Friends." Millions watched the final episode, and the cast appeared on "The Tonight Show" with JAY LENO, which was broadcast from the 'Central Perk' set.
Small-town politics:
Concord, MA, has become the first municipality in the country to ban all sales of bottled water.
"All these discarded bottles are damaging our planet," said activist JEAN HILL, "causing clumps of garbage in the oceans that hurt fish, and are creating more pollution on our streets. This is a great achievement to be the first in the country to do this. This is about addressing an injustice."
Hill is an 82-year-old activist who has been working on this cause for years.
The bottled-water industry is a $10 billion one, and representatives were quick to react to the ban. JOE DOSS, president of the International Bottled Water Association, told the Boston Globe, "We obviously don't think highly of the vote on Concord. Any efforts to discourage consumers from drinking water, whether tap water of bottled water, is not in the best interests of consumers. Bottled water is a very healthy, safe, convenient product that consumers use to stay hydrated."
For what it's worth, the United States alone requires four million barrels of oil (two-thirds of it imported) in order to simply make bottled water. (Maiman)Sucking the life out of the wire services:
ELISABETH HASSELBECK is under fire again --this time for remarks she made about ESPN reporter ERIN ANDREWS. The resident blonde on "The View" mentioned that the guy who stalked and posted nude video of the sports chick could have waited twelve weeks to see almost the same view on "Dancing With the Stars" --an inference that her outfits are on the family-friendly show are a little too revealing.
Elisabeth immediately realized her rash choice of words and her five-year-old daughter encouraged her to call Erin to apologize. She took her advice and made another heartfelt, tearful mea culpa on the daytime chat fest.
Editor's Note: Check it out for yourself HERE. (Lee)There's another twist in the DAVID BOREANAZ sex scandal. The actor came clean about straying from his wife earlier this week because he felt he was being extorted by celeb-u-torney GLORIA ALLRED. While rumors were swirling the mystery woman was TIGER WOODS' former mistress RACHEL UCHITEL, his legal eagles tell TMZ.com it's a different woman altogether. (Lee)
Off the beaten path:
Marriage on the rocks? There's still time to buy tickets to the first annual Divorce Fair in Milan, Italy, this weekend.
Reuters says the fair is geared toward helping recently divorced people start a new life. Services will include beauty advice, life-coaching and "Anti-stalking help."
Over 130-thousand couples get divorced in Italy each year. And, statistics show the number of Italian people getting married has been cut in half in recent decades. (Still)Drugs and drug companies:
Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing, at least when it comes to vitamins.
A new study printed in the online medical journal Stem Cells explains one multivitamin a day is fine, but you don't want to overdo it. Some people think if one is good, a lot must be better. But that's not true. People taking ten or 100 times the recommended dose of a daily multivitamin could be predisposing cells to developing cancer.
These potentially harmful effects are only a problem if you're taking too many vitamins or other nutritional supplements. You're not going to do any harm by eating excessive amounts of foods rich in antioxidants like milk, oranges, blueberries and peanuts. (Page)
