Grace notes from Vinny Marino:
MICHAEL JACKSON left his father, brothers and sisters out of his will. The UK's News Of The World tabloid says the late entertainer's mother KATHERINE will get 100-million dollars. His children, PRINCE, PARIS and BLANKET are set to receive 33-million dollars each, but that money will be placed in a trust fund which the kids can't touch until they are 30. Their inheritance will be based on the total worth of Michael's estate, so when they are old enough to cash in, each child could get 300-million bucks. (Marino)
Off the beaten path:
Germany's first national strip poker competition was a huge success last week. Now, organizers want to the event to go global.
According to Orange.co.uk, the contest included both professional and amateur players from all over Germany. And, it was a co-ed event. Hundreds of spectators watched the nekkid Texas hold'em tournament. And, several onlookers agreed that it was "a lot more interesting" than a regular game of poker.
No word yet where or when the international version might take place. (Still)Health and Medical Briefs:
Researchers at Ohio's Cleveland Medical Clinic have developed a possible breast cancer vaccine that may be able to wipe out the disease completely.
Lead researcher Dr VINCENT TUOHY says, "We truly believe that a preventive breast cancer vaccine will do to breast cancer what the polio vaccine has done to polio."
Tuohy's team developed a vaccine based on a protein commonly found in breast cancer tumors (the alpha-lactalbumin protein). Tested on mice, the vaccine stopped tumors from developing. "The drug also harnessed the power of the immune system to shrink pre-existing tumors by up to half, suggesting it could be used as a treatment as well as a vaccine."
The need for large-scale studies will likely keep the vaccine off the market for another decade, but Tuohy hopes to begin carrying out smaller tests on women as early as next year. If successful, researchers say that general practitioners would be able to offer the vaccine to women before they reach their mid-40s, the age at which the risk of breast cancer rises steeply.
While the vaccine is in testing, women can take these steps to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer: Maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, and reduce alcohol consumption.
Every month, about a thousand women die as a result of breast cancer and, in 2007, more than 45-thousand women were diagnosed. (Maiman)Anniversaries:
