I knew when I moved to the south that Friday night high school foot ball games were important. Off the chart important is more like it. I attended an event last week, on a Friday night, where a major recording artist was performing to a very small crowd. When I inquired why I was told without a shadow of a doubt "Friday night football."
This is not the way it is 'up North,' in fact my kids now joke that the South grows soldiers and athletes and New York grows actors and models.
My first high school football tailgate was much like a college ball experience; cars were decorated and blaring loud music and the food was serious- everything from filet mignon to hot dogs and spicy pinto beans. Some parents have an agreement with their workplace that during football season they get to leave work early to prepare for the game, and this is more than football parents: cheerleaders and band members are included in the festivities. My kids don't fall into any of those categories, they are theater geeks in rehearsal for the fall production. I've yet to find out if a tailgate happens before each show, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
