It's apple picking time with many orchards and farms offering hay rides, scarecrows, apple cider donuts and petting zoos. Picking your own is a family event and a consistent field trip for elementary school kids. Biting into a Honey Crisp right off the tree is heavenly. I took my daughter to an orchard when she was 8, telling her all the good things that were to come when we picked our own. Our first tree looked so promising and full of red juicy bulbs to pick and eat, still covered with the morning dew and all. We used the large hook to pull a branch closer and as she reached for her first apple I smiled inside at the sweetness of this memory, until a swarm of bess started attacking her and then me.
She and I aren't big on apple picking anymore, however we are on the hunt for a good pumpkin patch.
