It's Memorial Day. The purpose of this day, is to honor fallen warriors. This is sometimes overshadowed by the different routine a holiday schedule brings a family. It's a three day weekend that kicks off a new summer set of rules. It's a great time for shopping as retail outlets are open for business and there are numerous discounts available. Especially military discounts. Shoppingguru.com has an long list of deals. Most towns are ready for Memorial Day: parades are planned, barbecues are organized, fireworks too. Family vehicles are full of swim-suit clad kids and coolers. The beaches are full with new summer employees and folks ready to jump the waves. Let's remember to celebrate our soldier's courage and to remember the loss of those not with us any longer somewhere in between the scoops of ice cream served on this day.
Slather on the sunscreen and take a moment as most of us were given a free ride while other men and women fought for us. This includes military families that support those who protect us too. Tomorrow will most likely be a work day for the woman who cleaned up after the barbecue and got kids ready for another day of school or summer camp. If she can look back in a meaningful way on today then you did your job well. "She" is shopping, grilling, cleaning up, swimming, working and catering to the needs of her family. I'm reflecting. Twenty-two years ago today I was having my first baby. I was living in Manhattan, the lower tip called Battery Park and the hospital I was to deliver at was in Queens. The distance necessary to travel could have proved to be an enormous problem for a woman in labor. However we decided to take the wait and see approach. I consider it a gift from God that I went into labor on this holiday as most of New York was either sleeping, on the Jersey shore or in The Hampton's. It was 6am and the FDR Drive was a free ride. We traveled what technically should have taken 45 minutes without traffic-possibly hours with traffic in about 20 minutes. Happy Birthday Haylee.
