The karate moms have had much to discuss lately with all the summer vacations, barbecues, visiting in-laws and the looming back to school sales. The most recent topic was all about earrings, sort of. There I was typing away, minding my own iPad, when the mom next to me yawned loudly and commented that she could not get any sleep last night because she was worried about her daughter. For the next 60 minutes, non-stop, this woman explained how she and her husband decided to have her daughter's ears pierced when she was old enough to want them pierced. So when the daughter was 10, she and her mother were shopping at the mall and spontaneously decided to get her ears pierced. They went home to share their happy memory only to find that Dad was angry that he had not been consulted first. Now, three years, later this girl decided she wanted doubled ear piercings and this time decided to do it herself. She used a sewing needle and made the holes without telling anyone. Two days later her, mother noticed the extra earrings and flipped out, especially when she found out how her daughter did it. She could not sleep that night for fear of infection. Unfortunately, no one has broken the news to the dad yet. The mother keeps saying that she did nothing wrong and does not want to face the anger that's sure to come, and the daughter is now too afraid to fess-up to her rebellious fashion statement.I'm wondering what the reaction would be if this was about tattoos. By the time karate was over, this mom's plan was to get up early on Saturday morning, have a place to go with her son, and on the way out the door she'd tell her husband the situation. She would then run for cover, leaving the daughter home to fend for herself. I told her she should just send him an email or post it in Instagram.
