I was gettinge, a pedicure, and sitting in the chairs next to me were two ten-year-olds, an eight-year-old, and an eleventh grader, all wearing cheerleader gear. Yes, I was tuning in, a favorite form of show prep.
The mom that accompanied the girlswas across the room getting a manicure. When the nail technicians started talking about Netflix all the girls chimed in about how they loved staying up late watching movies, commenting that both parents went to bed early and never knew what they were watching. When the nail technicians started talking about Rated R shows like "Dirty Little Lies" and "Glow" I though- pause, these girls are too young for those shows.
Call me a prude or old school, but that's just not what I'd want my kids watching at that age, nor would I want them to get that recommendation from someone who is painting their toenails. So, I switched the conversation by asking if anyone ever watched "The Great British Bakeoff" which they did. I had a feeling you might find these girls baking a batch of cookies.
How does this silly little exchange parallel with radio? It's about the choices we make on the content we share. It takes an extra thought or two to decide if a break about "Stranger Things" or the latest SPANX product is beneficial versus a story sharing kindness, or a way to not let the holiday rush us get to our heads.
This is a format wide view of what the world needs, from my perspective. Sure, bits and tips and pop culture are necessary and commonly used pieces of prep, but with such a short time to connect wih the target where it matters, this time could be used to grow a newfound reason for thankfulness.
