"This is my selfie shirt," was printed boldly across her black t-shirt, and she was wearing it proudly. Even the dog she was walking was photo ready, with a matching bandana gracing his neck. Anything can be a picture perfect moment, but not everything is a post-able moment. Only the good shots get to star, and now our wardrobe is working overtime to make sure those good shots are taken.
Of course, we know the discussions on handheld devices and how much time we spend using them. Families struggle with just how long their kids spend online, and when they should reduce screen time. I was always against putting a television in any of my kid's bedrooms. I thought what they watched should be carefully siphoned through the right channels, and if they had a television in their bedroom that would also eliminate a lot of family time. At least we had family meals and television watching in the family or playroom, right! Their cell phones and the internet slowly took that away.
One of my mom friends has three teenagers and finally decided that their family would turn off their internet at 10 pm every night. This way mom, dad, and kids all had a better chance of falling asleep without the glare of the blue screen of distraction. Her sons do not appreciate this, but mom says everyone is sleeping better.
In media, especially radio, we never want anyone flipping a switch and eliminating us from their day or night. Focus on making moments matter, keeping it local whenever possible gives the best chance for a meaningful connection. I was just working with a new morning team and we were gathering sites and sources for local content. We searched: Seattle Moms, Seattle Churches, Seattle moments, and Seattle families. We found a plethora of locally sourced content in minutes, ready for that clutch break, no backward selfie shirt required. But, it would be cute to see a station t-shirt in a few selfies, I mean talk about relatable. I'd love to know what your t-shirts say, find me @bethbacall.
