Kids with disabilities have many extras to consider when heading back to school.
This can be a stressful, but hopefully positive time for families. As the mother of a diabetic daughter I met many wonderful school nurses; some had an understanding of my daughter's needs, and some did not but were willing to learn.
There are misconceptions about many diseases, and “not being allowed to eat sugar” was not the instruction when caring for my kid. Blood tests and insulin shots were.
Finding the right accommodation for any student is worth the space it takes. Parents become investigators to see what services are truly available, they become advocates, cheerleaders, and liaisons. Special needs teachers and ParaPros are angels in our schools, in addition to the rest of the school staff.
Every student deserves the chance and atmosphere to develop their gifts.
