The standards I set for cleanliness in my house is a lot different than the standards my kids think are correct, as their idea of a clean room is way different than mine. Instead of saying "I'm the mom, do what I say" I first try to remember what I was like at their age; I'll be first to admit that doing the dinner dishes was not my favorite job. I would "accidentally" leave the used fat filled broiler pan in the oven 'forgetting' to wash it. Although now I can look back and think how much my mom probably did not appreciate finding this little surprise the following day when I was at school, I thought it was a disgusting job and did not want to touch the waxy, greasy fat. Still, I kept my room pretty neat. Now, I need to venture into one teen's room weekly just to be able to restock my glassware and cereal bowls. But, I've learned to pick my battles when it comes to situations like this and I've come to an agreement with myself and my kids: they need to make their beds daily before they leave school, straighten their room to my standards once a week and clean it thoroughly every two weeks, all within reason of course. I find shutting their door and remembering how cute they were when they were young works quite well for me. Before I know it, I'll be turning one of those rooms into a home office and the other into an exercise area. Yeah, they can be a little messy as long as I can be a little sentimental, or hopeful.
