Summer camp productions tend to bring out the performance artist in all who attend camp. At a recent day camp show where the "campers worked tirelessly all week" It was the counselors that sang the Bon Jovi solo's, handled the Dirty Dancing routines, and performed the Emcee duties and played in the band. The campers were used as background talent with a few cute kids allowed access to the front of the stage in hopes of bringing that "aww factor". I believe these kids were favorites amongst the staff and got stage time strictly based on who they knew. Yes, the politics run high in summer camp as cliques are quickly formed between both camper and counselor. It's a whole new popularity contest between returning campers and newbies. Sleep-away camp is considered an important growing tool by many. Some kids talk about it all year long. Upon my daughters return from a stay at Camp Nejeda I found myself surrounded by piles of dirty laundry. I found mildewy art projects in her foot locker and items I couldn't exactly figure out. Yet anytime I'd go to throw something away I'd hear, "Mom, no that's a precious treasure to me!" How silly of me. So today remember that one persons smelly undistinguishable item could resemble a great experience.
