A friends daughter; Abby, was turning three and to celebrate we attended a birthday party where the kids play and the adults stand around and watch them. Abby was in her glory wearing a frilly dress and tiara. This birthday girl was enjoying much attention plus having good playtime. Her mother however was trying desperately to let all her plans unfold. These three year olds really had no desire for musical chairs, but they did love running around the swing set. the party bags were beautifully decorated with personalized bags and name plates yet I wondered how long it would take for this stuff to end up on the bottom of the toy chest. This mom poured her heart out in the preparations for this party right down to the pink cupcakes topped with juicy strawberries. They looked beautiful except after one bite the kids would abandon this treat and seek more playtime. I was curious what could be wrong with a little cake topped with frosting and fruit, to me it's the perfect food. I took one for myself, and after my first (and last) bite I knew something was wrong. Maybe mom forgot an ingredient in the making of the frosting. I was staring at this treat in disbelief. It was one of those how could something be so right be so wrong moments. I stood there; fork in one hand, plate with cupcake on it in the other and Abby walks by. In the cutest of voices she says "mommy made the cupcakes with cauliflower because she loves me so much." Her mother following close behind smiles at me and says "don't you love the cupcakes, I made the cake part with zucchini and the frosting out of pureed cauliflower." Thankfully she didn't stick around for my response as she was setting up a pin the tail on the donkey game.
