Fun-sized candy bars have taken over this month of October, along with pink ribbons. The ribbons have a purpose; the candy makes us need one. I believe that the dreaded holiday eating starts now. Right before Halloween is when all those year end calories and extra pounds start getting added on, and it all ramps nicely into the New Year. No matter where I go: the dry cleaner, the pharmacy, my kids school, a restaurant, there are fun-sized Halloween candies offered complimentary. There is nothing fun about a quick flavor boost in your mouth that ends up being over 100 calories that requiring hours at the gym to burn off. I so wish I had my kid's metabolism. Then I could really have fun with that bag of mini dark Milky Way bars. There's a candy dish on my boss's desk. He fills it intermittently with lemon drops, trail mix, M&M's and oddly Slim Jim's (which I find disgustingly fatty and not fun). It's interesting to see what candy sticks around the longest and what leaves fast. Anything chocolate is gone as quickly as it's added. But things like mints and taffy and sweet-tarts stick around a long time. My boss receives a steady run of visitors throughout the day thanks to this sweet perk. But please don't tell him that this is why we visit, really it's not. I'll come up with a better reason by the next column. Have a Butterfinger while you're waiting.
