Early this morning, just as I'm about to step foot in the shower, I receive a text message from my teenage daughter asking if I could pick her up at the bus stop and drive her to high school because the school bus did not come. I grab the nearest pair of pajama pants along with a sweatshirt and rush out the door. My morning time-line has just been drastically changed by 30 minutes, which is the time it takes to make a round trip to and from said high school. Did I mention this was the daughter that barely grunts at me in the morning? The daughter I had already offered a ride to about 40 minutes ago seeing how she was running late? Love is a many splendor thing.
I pull up to a bus stop full of every stereo-typical teen who is also waiting for something, anything to take them to school. That would be me.
It was like a scene out of the "Breakfast Club" movie. My kid sits in the front seat next to me and gives the 'please don't embarrass me look", my backseat encompasses one Molly Ringwald type and two Judd Nelsons, all smelling shower-fresh and thankful for the transportation. I say hello, smile and drive in silence as they discuss music (no one likes Justin Bieber) and how they would much rather be sleeping.
In an attempt to not embarrass my daughter I drove in silence with the radio on low, wondering if my choice of station would matter to them. They were all too busy texting and listening to their own iPods to really care what I had on. I'm wondering what a radio consultant would say about this.
All these kids were very polite, and thankful for the lift ,joking as they made their exit that they would prefer to be anyplace else on this day. I think my kid however was more thankful I didn't embarrass her.
