Waaaaahh!

I recently encountered a distressed mom at the grocery store. She had a weary look on her face, hair pulled back and was wearing sweat and a look that said I could really use a nap. She was shopping while her toddler was having a screaming meltdown because he could not have something on the shelf in front of him. This mom was trying to ignore he sons attempt to get what he wanted, but in the meantime everyone in the store was concerned, as they did not know what all the screaming was about. I'm pretty sure most knew it had to be a lesson involving a child, but the screeches coming out of this kid were unsettling. This little guy really had a good set of lungs, and it was quite alarming. And he wanted nothing to do with the food or toys previously offered as a buffer.

So what's a mom to do? Here she is with half a cart full of supplies and a child that needed immediate attention. Her options are limited: she could abandon her task at hand and take her son home; she could put her cart someplace where hopefully no one would start putting the items back on the shelf and try to calm son down outside, returning once he calms down; or she herself could start screaming and see what the reverse psychology route does. Most professionals say that in situations like this a child should be removed from the scene and brought home promptly to some form of discipline, which should teach that this behavior is not acceptable. But no one ever mentions where mom is suppose to find the time for a return trip to the store. Besides, most kid's objective is to get home anyway, as grocery shopping is pretty boring. Necessary for her, boring for them. Welcome to one of her many crossroads.

She's not so sure

New York City' NYC Life channel has a show called "Doggie Moms", featuring five women and their dogs-in-a-bag. These are all dogs you can carry in a handbag like groceries. There wear thousand of dollars of dog clothes, and some match outfits with their owners. There are doggie charity events, a famous dog model and single women who have dogs instead of husbands. It aires 9:30 p.m EST, Wednesdays, on NYC Life.
