I would truly love to have my kid's metabolism. In fact I don't think I have ever had a metabolism that could consume mass quantities of fat ladened carbohydrates without repercussions. Although I try to balance the processed foods they love with healthy options, they still consume boxes of Totino's pizza rolls, Oreos, Dumplings, Hot Pockets, Cheetos and Kraft Mac & Cheese. Here is my youngest daughter's usual afternoon snack: three slices of Ellio's pizza, Pop-tarts and a bowl of ramen washed down by a Jone's Bubblegum flavored soda. You probably can't believe I buy all that stuff, neither can I. But long gone are the days of peanut butter toast and sliced apples. I offer to add a piece of fruit or salad with her snack, but if grumbles could hurt I'd be in pain. Besides teenage rule number 6 is not to speak to said child directly after school until adequate wind down time has happened. Rule number 4 is to stock the pantry with food that mom can't eat or shouldn't eat or doesn't want to eat.
I have a better playing field at dinnertime as everyone has to have a little of something and if you want seconds of the main course you have to have seconds of the veggie. These are my main rules, along with no cellphones at the table. Sometimes my kids seem a little twitchy at this time and I'm not sure if it's the addition of healthier food into their systems or the removal of a cellular device from their hands. I hope I never find out the answer to this.
