Cut & Color

Here I am at the hair salon surrounded by chairs filled with women and one lone male who all have some type of chemical on their hair to change its color. Many have foils popping out all over their head, as this is the best way to process bleach. It's a weeknight and this place is packed, I think there's an XM channel floating in the midst along with blow dryer and water sounds. So far I've heard Brandon Heath, The Weepies and now The Plain White Tees. Everyone is wrapped in dark cotton robes to prevent damage to their clothes. These women are chatty and reading magazines or playing with their hand held devices. All the stylists are totally engaged with their projects, as they are very interested in a good result. The client/hairstylist relationship is a critical piece in her life and usually not taken lightly. My friend Melissa is a rarity, she can go into a chain cutting salon like Great Clips and get a cut that is likened to the styles the ladies sitting around me in this higher end salon are expecting. Melissa has always been lucky like that as I have other friends who have also tried this route, to disastrous results. I'm always so inspired by the salon staff stylists at most good shops; everyone from the reservationist to the "hairdresser" always does, and should, look great. They all seem to have this effortless style that makes you want to take them shopping with you. They obviously are sporting the latest hair trend, their clothes and makeup speak volumes about their personality and they generally seem balanced and happy with their career. These are artsy service people. There are many different types of service; this particular batch is one women cling to for inspiration and help in appearance; something to remember when speaking to and tipping her.
