Why am I unreasonable about articulating your mission in a short, concise way? Because research shows that 70% will remember one sentence, while only 30% remember two.
However, it's not simply about saying something ... but expressing that which is only right for you.
Facebook = To make the world more open and connected.
Twitter = To instantly connect people everywhere to what's most important to them.
Dyson = Solve the small problems most people ignore.
Each of these statements sums up the centerpiece of mission in only a few words, but creates a unique position and competitive advantage instantly. They provide discipline, flexibility and the ability for others to easily collaborate, co-create, interact and be empowered through it.
The great ones have depth and don't have to be explained ... you simply "get it" instantly and experience it through all the senses.
Do you understand your reason for being? Here's a tip: If you have to explain it to others, or they have to think about what it means to them, it's absolutely wrong.
In my opinion, it makes all the difference in only building something to simply manipulate people ... or fulfilling a promise that ignites meaning in every moment.
One will only make something happen ... the other will change the world.
The starting point to discover your mission is to examine what makes you irresistible, lose time, and stand up straighter when you are doing it. And to uncover the depth, don't think about the tools or mechanics -- think about why you do it for others.
So, what's at the centerpiece of your mission?
