Can't Be Without Your Tunes

Students in Natick, Massachusetts are protesting a ban against listening to their iPods during class time, specifically study hall. Juniors and seniors are still allowed to listen. But... since when have kids been able to listen to music while in class? I mean, we've had Walkmen and other devices for decades, and I don't remember them being permitted in study hall or anything else. When did that become acceptable?
