When Macy's bought up all the big regional department store chains and changed them all to Macy's, there was almost unanimous criticism that the move, intended to unify national marketing, was a mistake, because they lost sight of regional preferences in merchandise and marketing. Now, years later, the chain is finally carrying different items for different areas. The upshot: Increased sales. Imagine that. (New York Times)
