If You're Looking For Good Judgement From A School Bus Driver, Give Up Now
-
You know my position on the kind of people who become school bus drivers, all based on my memories of camp bus driven by Kindly Mr. Bates, who was three sheets to the wind at 7 am and drove our bus -- literally -- down a hill through what were basically severe off-road conditions as a "short cut." Kindly Mr. Bates, however, never did, at least when I was on the bus, do what this guy did. First, he got his license suspended for not bothering with the state's law requiring checkups for all school bus drivers over 70 every six months. Then, in the recent ultra-severe rainstorms on the East Coast, he drove a bus full of kids into floodwaters and got stuck. Now, nobody seems to be able to explain why this guy was allowed to be behind the wheel of a school bus. But you could say that about every school bus driver, couldn't you? (Hartford Courant)
