Cheaper Is Better

This article about the closing of stores by the Genuardi's (usually pronounced jen-AR-dees) chain, part of Safeway, in Philadelphia wouldn't be of national significance except that it signals something that IS happening elsewhere: the demise of the "regular," mid-market supermarket. On one end, you have the Wal-Mart Supercenters and Super Target offering ultra-discounted prices. On the other end, you have Wegman's and Bristol Farms and Trader Joe's and other "gourmet" stores serving the high end, and "deluxe" versions of regular chains like Kroger's "Fresh Fare." Add to that Costco and Sam's Club, plus other stores, like drug stores, selling more food. In the middle, there may be too many stores. Have you changed your shopping habits over the last decade or so? Is there a future for the "regular" supermarket? (Philadelphia Inquirer)
