You Probably Don't Need The 13th Grade
-
A study says that most students at California's community colleges never graduate. Since the state's taxpayers pay a lot to have these schools, and there are subsidies and loans to have people attend, this is a problem. But it also raises the question once again of why people are pushed to go to college. Even the president pushes that. And for many -- maybe most -- people, a college education isn't useful. At the same time, we treat trades -- plumbing, carpentry, pipe-fitting -- as if they're what you do when you're a loser, instead of skills to be valued and respected. So we pay for people to flame out in anthropology classes in two-year schools while fewer and fewer people go into trades we need. (Los Angeles Daily News)
