It's A Pit, But It's A Special, Historic Pit
-
Chicago Tribune columnist Steve Chapman asks the question Chicagoans just don't confront: Is it time to tear down Wrigley Field? The question's appropriate because the Cubs want the state -- taxpayers -- to loan $300 million to fix the place up, and even after the repairs, the place is still, you know, ancient and outdated, no room for luxury boxes or video boards or your knees. And for a little more, they could build one brand-new with all the amenities. He points out that the Yankees tore down Yankee Stadium for a new one, and that place was home to all those championships. But it's Wrigley, and you can't replace the atmosphere, from walking up to the place on game day to the ivy, the hand-operated scoreboard, the fans gathering to catch home run balls on Waveland... if they build new parks to evoke the classic old parks, why tear down an actual, authentic, existing version?
