This family could be poster children for the New Depression: once affluent, now struggling. Surely, a lot of families are in that position. But then you see that this guy sold his business for $14 million in 1998 and squanderd it all, spending on houses, horses, cars, and travel. They moved to England, where the guy wrote a novel that nobody bought, then moved to Vermont, each time spending a lot. They spent and spent and spent until they had nothing left. That doesn't make them poster children for the recession, that just makes them people who fell victim to their own excess. (New York Times)
