Almost The Perfect Political Scam
-
This sheriff killed himself after getting embroiled in a controversy involving what probably seemed to him like the perfect scam: Five days before getting re-elected, he filed for retirement, meaning that, if he'd stuck to it rather than folding when people found out and the law closed in, he would have collected a $98,000-a-year pension and a $123,000 annual salary at the same time. That, and allegations of skimming campaign funds, drew the ire of the press and public, and he shot himself. Normally, these guys stay unrepentant. (Boston Herald)
