Lawmakers Should Be Seen And Not Heard

One of the biggest problems with being a partisan of one party or another is that you end up making excuses for idiocy when one of "your side" says something inexcusably moronic. So if you're a Republican stalwart, you're pondering whether to excuse Oklahoma state Rep. Sally Kern (R-Oklahoma City) for saying that "people of color" don't "study hard" because they expect the government to take care of them. And she also said women don't work as hard as men because they want to be home with their families. She was speaking for a constitutional amendment to eliminate affirmative action, but because of her comments, she's given ammunition to the opposition to say it's all racism. It was a stupid thing to say; it also points out that some elected officials, including people with whom you might agree, are pretty stupid, too, on both sides of the aisle. Getting elected is hardly an indicator that you have a functioning brain. (KOCO-TV/Oklahoma City)
