Are We Blase About This By Now? Can We Get There Already?

There are few less hospitable places to be gay than on a pro sports team. It's not Uganda, but there's a reason nobody's come out while playing in a major American pro sport, not until they retire. That makes it more interesting that the President and CEO of the Phoenix Suns has come out. It's also interesting that the players don't seem to mind, and some seem to have assumed that in advance. But he came out to David Stern just before Kobe Bryant called a ref the "other f-word." So there's work to be done. And then there's CNN anchor Don Lemon, who wrote a book to reveal that he's gay. I don't think being a gay news anchor's that big a deal to the audience. Maybe it is to the people who run the networks, but the public doesn't care. In fact, the public mostly doesn't even know who Don Lemon is. I didn't. But it still takes some intestinal fortitude to come out in the media, and it will get him some attention. (New York Times)
