More Charges In More Places
-
The New York Times' David Pogue is on another crusade against wireless billing practices, and this time it's about something that's truly annoying: Verizon (and, it seems, AT&T, too) puts non-reprogrammable keys on the phone that call up "Buy It Now!" and "Mobile Web" applications that automatically charge $1.99 every time you press the button, whether you intended to or not. It's like they design the keys to guarantee you'll accidentally "buy" something. And you even get charged if you have those services blocked: the message you get that the service is blocked uses data, and they charge you for a minimum of 1 MB of data ($1.99) even then. But they probably figure, where you gonna go? The other carriers are just as bad, and you won't want to pay that early termination fee.
