It wasn't long ago that big banks, fed up with the cost of doing business in Manhattan, pulled up stakes and built elaborate offices in the suburbs. Chief among them was UBS, which built a palace in the Connecticut suburbs, a huge operation featuring the world's largest trading floor. Now, just a few years later, they're considering moving back to Manhattan. Why? Because nobody wants to work in the suburbs. When you try to hire the top prospects, they don't want to work away from all the other banks; they want to work on or near Wall Street. Stamford isn't Wall Street. (New York Times)
