You Pay For The Privilege Of Paying
-
The list of egregious behavior by banks and airlines is getting longer. This travel column adds two more: a "foreign transaction fee" slapped on anything you buy from a business based in a foreign country -- including Canada -- even if you pay in America using American currency, and, worse, a "convenience fee" for paying for an airline ticket with a credit card. Convenience? What it is, is that the airlines want to get YOU to pay THEIR credit transaction fees, and want to grab a quick profit in addition to that. Does it cost $14 per ticket to process the credit card? Of course not. But they're banking on you paying it, because how else are you going to pay for a plane ticket?
