Can't Afford It. Next!

We had an item not too long ago about one city's plans to do this, but now it's a major issue in a lot of Southern California cities: they're thinking about ending their participation in the Rose Parade, because they don't want to spend money on floats when they're scraping to pay for important services. But even in good times, what's the point of a city building a float for the Rose Parade? Do people in the Midwest care that, say, Gardena has a float? Do they even know where Gardena is? Do they care? What benefit is there for a city to sponsor a float? (Los Angeles Times)
