Can We Ban Singular Team Names From Here On Out?
-
The naming of the Winnipeg NHL franchise the "Jets" prompted this story about the importance of naming teams for maximum marketability, but I think it's just promotion of the hacks who design those awful names and logos that permeate sports these days. One of the "experts" actually criticized the Jets for being too generic and boring, suggesting that the club should have been called the "Jetstream." You know, the biggest merchandising successes in sports have "generic" names -- the Yankees, the Cowboys, the Packers, the Lakers. You can't get more generic and unimaginative than "Red Sox" or "Phillies," but they're selling a ton of merchandise these days. Heritage and present-day winning are the key, not focus-group testing.
