It's All The Same Once You Go West Through The Lincoln Tunnel, Right?
-
As you may have read, I was in Minneapolis (mostly St. Louis Park, if you want to get all technical about it) last week, and I saw this in the Star-Tribune about how Minneapolis and St. Paul are starting to become more alike. If you're unaware of the reputations, St. Paul sees Minneapolis as slick, uppity, yuppified, snooty; Minneapolis sees St. Paul as the poor relation. St. Paul prides itself on being down-to-earth and "real"; Minneapolis has the skyscrapers and Walker Art Museum and expensive houses near the lakes. Neither stereotype is 100% true, but that's the idea. Anyway, the perception is that they're losing their individuality and becoming one big metropolis, and that echoes what people think about America -- it's becoming the same everywhere you go as chain stores and restaurants dominate and even regional accents disappear. Do you see differences between towns and neighborhoods and counties in your area going away? Are we losing that diversity? (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)
