Talk About Lost Art Forms....
-
Dead: Alex Sternweiss. Who? He was the guy who, as a graphic designer for Columbia Records in 1939, invented the record album cover, not the cardboard but the idea of putting artwork on it. Back then, records came in plain or generic sleeves, and "albums" were literally bound albums with "pages" of sleeves containing 78s). He put a photo of a theater marquee on the cover of a Rodgers and Hart collection, and that was the beginning of album art. Nowadays, though, "album art" is a JPEG that shows up on your iPhone when you play a file. (New York Times)
