Though They're Having A Better Season Than Torii Hunter So Far
-
This Los Angeles Times business columnist is, to put it plainly, to the left of the political spectrum, so it's not a surprise that he wrote this column decrying how the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pay vendors and ushers low wages, lower than some other franchises, despite being one of baseball's more successful clubs. They pay $11.21 an hour and wanted to freeze that for three years, then offered just 20 cent increases for the second and third years. The workers, members of the SEIU, want more and complain that $11.21 is too low. But what the columnist doesn't really address is that these jobs a) aren't supposed to be primary jobs, but are more supplemental income for teens and seniors; b) it's hardly a skilled job and there are plenty of people willing to step in and do it for $11.21; and c) ushers get tips, and so do some vendors. And, let's face it, yes, the players make a fortune, but that's who people come to see, not the vendors and ushers. Should they get a big raise anyway? (Los Angeles Times)
